Stockholm Adopts Creative Commons Licensing for Culture Content

Stockholm: 17 November 2009

On the Blog by the Stockholm Culture and Sport Mayor, there is announcement saying that the Creative Commons licensing will be used for the City Archives and City Museum pictures. This is part of development work underway by Stockholm to put in place policies for accessing cultural digital materials on the internet.

The Blog announcement asks for tips on how Stockholm can make other materials available digitally. The discussion on the Blog responds by suggesting:

“…other material to make available under freer license forms: maps, road database drawings and other data on buildings, real-time traffic data (also from SL), register of traders...all this makes possible to build on lots of interesting commercial and non profit applications.”

This development with Stockholm making digital content available via Creative Common Licensing (CCL) is in keeping with other jurisdictions either using or investigating CCL to make public sector information available via CCL. For example, Geoscience Australia has all their content on the web under CCL and is an example of geographic PSI available under CCL.

The Stockholm Blog Announcement (Swedish) states (English translation below):

“Stockholm hidden collections should be more accessible to residents. Therefore, the Culture Board has decided today on the introduction of Creative Commons Licensing for the City Archives and the City Museum pictures. This is the beginning of a job focused on putting in place a policy for the use of digital images from the City of Stockholm's collections.

Last spring, the Board gave culture management a mandate to develop proposals for a policy on publishing digital content, in order to make available the city's collections. The administration suggests that targeting a system of symbols related to the international Creative Commons license, which clearly highlight the extent and manner in which various images and texts may be used. Creative Commons will also be supplemented with additional symbols for the City of Stockholm's collections. The administration will now have a mandate to continue working in this direction, and then come back with a concrete policy for the digital material.

This decision is one of a series of decisions to make available information, culture and heritage on the Internet. The other day we presented the so-called Chydeniusinitiativet, initiative, which means that the City Archives may be assigned to work with the publicity principle shall apply with the new information technologies. City of Stockholm has introduced a first application of open source and culture committee has decided to upload wizard availability of open format on the web. The Liberal Party in Stockholm has also had an open program working on Internet policy.

Give us more tips on the city's labour and materials can be made available digitally, or how we can use the Internet better in our communication! “
